The 25 MW/100 MWh EVx™ Gravity Energy Storage System (GESS) is a 4-hour duration project being built outside of Shanghai in Rudong, Jiangsu Province, China. The EVx™ is under construction directly adjacent to a wind farm and national grid.

Gravity energy storage, a technology based on gravitational potential energy conversion, offers advantages including long lifespan, environmental friendliness, and low maintenance costs, demonstrating broad application prospects in renewable energy integration and grid peak regulation.
However, these systems are highly affected by their design parameters. This paper presents a novel investigation of different design features of gravity energy storage systems. A theoretical model was developed using MATLAB SIMULINK to simulate the performance of the gravitational energy storage system while changing its design parameters.
The system’s overall round-trip efficiency ranges between 70 and 75%. The entire process is chemical-free and environmentally friendly. Suitable for mountainous areas and abandoned mines, several pilot projects of rail-mounted gravity energy storage systems have already been implemented.
