Energy storage and management technologies are key in the deployment and operation of electric vehicles (EVs). To keep up with continuous innovations in energy storage technologies, it is necessary to develop corresponding management strategies. In this Review, we discuss technological advances in energy storage management.
We offer an overview of the technical challenges to solve and trends for better energy storage management of EVs. Energy storage management is essential for increasing the range and efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs), to increase their lifetime and to reduce their energy demands.
Energy storage systems are devices, such as batteries, that convert electrical energy into a form that can be stored and then converted back to electrical energy when needed 2, reducing or eliminating dependency on fossil fuels 3. Energy storage systems are central to the performance of EVs, affecting their driving range and energy efficiency 3.
The emergence of large-scale energy storage systems is contingent on the successful commercial deployment of TES techniques for EVs, which is set to influence all forms of transport as vehicle electrification progresses, including cars, buses, trucks, trains, ships, and even airplanes (see Fig. 4).
