Yemen, widely regarded as the Middle East’s least electrified nation, is now benefiting from its first large-scale solar plant, which is helping restore power to tens of thousands of households in Aden. The Aden Solar Power Plant, a 120-megawatt facility funded by the United Arab Emirates, began operations in July 2024.
In a historic ceremony, Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak officially inaugurated the solar power plant in Aden. The project, with a capacity of 120 megawatts (MW) and a cost of $500 million, marks a significant milestone for renewable energy in Yemen.
Facilitated by an agreement between the Ministry of Electricity and Energy and Masdar, the 120 MW solar plant includes the construction of transmission lines and substations needed to integrate solar energy into Yemen’s electricity grid.
UAE-based Global South Utilities, an energy and water infrastructure company, is boosting its solar power generation capacity in Yemen to provide electricity to thousands of homes amid growing power challenges in the country.
