Solar power can be used to create new fuels that can be stored and later used to provide energy. Existing compressed air energy storage systems often use the released air as part of a natural gas power cycle to produce electricity.
Coupling solar energy and storage technologies is one such case. The reason is that solar energy is not always produced at the time energy is needed most. Peak power usage often occurs on summer afternoons and evenings, when solar energy generation is falling.
Solar storage is important because it allows solar energy to contribute to the electricity supply even when the sun isn’t shining. It also helps smooth out variations in solar energy flow on the grid, which are caused by changes in sunlight.
Under some conditions, excess renewable energy is produced and, without storage, is curtailed 2, 3; under others, demand is greater than generation from renewables. Grid-scale energy-storage (GSES) systems are therefore needed to store excess renewable energy to be released on demand, when power generation is insufficient 4.
