According to Global Energy Monitor, the country currently operates 19.5 GW of utility-scale solar and wind capacity, more than double the combined capacity of all other ASEAN nations. Renewables now account for 25 percent of Vietnam''s energy mix, significantly outpacing the regional average of 9 percent.
Vietnam has undergone one of the largest solar booms in Asia. This boom results from favourable government policies, rapidly growing energy demand and ideal conditions for solar energy. The country''s updated Power Development Plan 8 will continue this trajectory, with solar making up most of the country''s energy supply by 2050.
Solar power in Vietnam presents significant economic, environmental and energy security benefits. Economically, solar power reduces dependency on costly imported fossil fuels, stabilises energy prices and boosts local job creation. Some estimates show that the wind and solar sector will create over 300,000 new jobs in Vietnam by the 2030s.
In Vietnam, the available potential for biomass energy in electricity production is estimated at around 1,000–2,000 MW. Among biomass sources, wood is the primary resource, accounting for approximately 40% of the total potential, equivalent to 20 million TOE. Wood is utilized for electricity generation, heat production, and biofuel development.
