An energy storage system (ESS) for electricity generation uses electricity (or some other energy source, such as solar-thermal energy) to charge an energy storage system or device, which is discharged to supply (generate) electricity when needed at desired levels and quality. ESSs provide a variety of services to support electric power grids.
Energy storage solutions for electricity generation include pumped-hydro storage, batteries, flywheels, compressed-air energy storage, hydrogen storage and thermal energy storage components. The ability to store energy can facilitate the integration of clean energy and renewable energy into power grids and real-world, everyday use.
Electric energy storage can also increase the predictability of integrating renewables like wind and solar onto the power grid. Currently, global storage capacity is less than 2 percent of the total electric power production capacity. For example, wind farms often generate more power at night when winds speeds are high but demand for electricity is low. Electric energy storage could be used to shift this output to periods of high demand. Similarly, storage could capture excess overnight generation from a baseload nuclear power plant.
